Funding Types

  • Grant – Non-repayable funds awarded to support artistic or community projects.

  • Project Grant – Funding tied to a specific artwork, mural, or installation.

  • Unrestricted Funding – Funds usable for general expenses (rare and valuable).

  • Seed Funding – Early support for launching a new project or body of work.

  • Matching Funds – Required contribution from the artist (cash or in-kind).

  • In-Kind Support – Non-cash contributions such as materials, space, or labor.

  • Commission – Paid contract to create a specific work, often site-based.

  • Honorarium – Modest payment recognizing professional contribution or expertise.



Application Language

  • Eligibility – Mandatory criteria determining whether you may apply.

  • Panel Review – Evaluation by a group of artists, curators, and administrators.

  • Scoring Rubric – Criteria used to rank applications (merit, impact, feasibility).

  • Artistic Merit – Assessment of quality, originality, and craftsmanship.

  • Feasibility – Prove the project can be completed within time and budget.

  • Work Samples – Images documenting skill, scale, and material knowledge.

  • Supplemental Materials – Optional support such as sketches or process photos.



Public Art & Mosaic-Specific Terms

  • RFQ (Request for Qualifications) – Selection based on experience and past work.

  • RFP (Request for Proposals) – Requires a design response to a site or theme.

  • Site-Responsive Work – Art designed specifically for a physical location.

  • Fabrication Budget – Costs for materials, cutting, fabrication, mounting, and assembly/can be outsourced /

  • Installation Plan – Explanation of transport, mounting, and site logistics.

  • Maintenance Plan – Strategy for long-term care of the mosaic.

  • Public Benefit – How the work serves others, not just the artist.

  • Accessibility – Physical, cultural, or economic inclusion in the project.

  • Stakeholders – Individuals or groups invested in the project's outcome.

  • Cultural Equity – Intentional inclusion of underrepresented voices.



Professional & Reporting Terms

  • Artist Statement – Clear articulation of conceptual and material approach.

  • Project Narrative – Focused story of this work: why, where, and how.

  • Deliverables – Tangible outcomes promised in the grant agreement.

  • Documentation – Professional images and records of the completed work.

  • Final Report – Required summary of outcomes, images, and budget use.

  • Outcomes vs. Outputs – Outputs are what you made; outcomes are what changed.
